True in Some Sense
Paul St. Claire
Coincidence is a funny thing. Sure, granted, getting a mysterious note from an equally mysterious stranger hardly seems like coincidence, but still. What are the odds?
What are the odds that an artificial person is going to get kidnapped by Chinese triads, thrown into an inner city brothel, and rescued by an alchemist with some experience with artificial people? All in her very first day in the city, no less?
Don’t answer that.
The point is, Paul’s limited conversation about himself implies that this sort of coincidence is almost expected in his life.
To make a long story short, Paul is an alchemist who happens to be driving around and happens to know a thing or two about people like Gidget — Prometheans, he calls them. Created by alchemy and obsession, apparently they are all on a quest to become human.
Right now, he seems to be helping Gidget on her Pilgrimage — again, Promethean term referring to the quest to become human — for however long the two walk the same path.
The guy’s a pretty decent wheelman, too.
